Gradual Website Migration from MODX

We do not suggest shutting down the old website and spending several months writing a new one in the hope that everything will eventually match up.

The goal of the migration is not just to replace MODX with another technology. The business needs an environment where modern specialists, AI tools, and automation can deliver real productivity gains. The general principle is detailed on futurist.expert: the growth of specialist productivity requires the corresponding development of the business's technological environment.

An old MODX project often already contains years of accumulated value: data, SEO, integrations, business logic, and established processes. Therefore, the economically sensible strategy is not to destroy this asset for the sake of a fancy new stack, but to gradually remove the legacy parts that make changes expensive and prevent the utilization of new performance capabilities.

The migration is built in stages:

  1. We stabilize and freeze the current state;
  2. We separate data and business logic from the old frontend;
  3. We connect the API;
  4. We migrate pages and sections to the new stack;
  5. We preserve existing URLs and SEO signals;
  6. We gradually remove MODX from the critical path;
  7. We decommission the legacy system only when it is truly no longer needed.

This way, the business remains on a working website at all times, and each stage can be tested independently. At the same time, the value of the migration manifests not only in cleaner modern code, but in the gradual reduction of the cost of future changes.
